What are metrics?
Metrics are nothing new. They have been used in business for years as a way of calculating risks, measuring results, progress and evaluating areas that need improvements. They are a way to record relevant data, then analyze and evaluate that data to make necessary changes in a company. Metrics like cost-analysis savings, overhead costs, inventory size are all designed to give businesses logical, systematic ways to track success or failure.

“If you cannot measure your success, how do you know when you get there?”

Metrics is the logical approach in life and in business.

Business metrics. Progress.

In business one the most important metrics is monthly profit and loss. A business must be vigilant to track, not only the outgoing expenses (or loss), but the profits also. If a company does the metrics for June, and finds that there are more expenses than profits, adjustments have to be made. It’s not magic; it’s math. That’s how a business stays lean and profitable. But what about you?

How can you use metrics in your life?

You can run your own life like a company using metrics. What are your specific goals? Make SMART goals by finding a way to mathematically and systematically measure your wins and losses along the way. If you are trying to lose weight, for example, you can measure your success by the kilograms on the scale. If you gain weight one week, instead of losing, you know you need to evaluate what you did to get that result and make adjustments. Do you need to increase your daily exercise? Decrease your overall calorie intake? Any goal can be measured, evaluated and adjusted using metrics. That’s SMART!

SUCCESS will not be served on a silver platter at noon every day, you can dream as much as you like but it will not happen. If you are reading till here it is because you have a true desire in making your life different, Thats great, now start measuring yourself to yourself and knowing what you are really capable of. Everything will become much clearer once you begin that inevitable work of working on yourself, you can skip it if you please but you will always miss on some things in your life simply because you could not understand that they where happening, how would you know you are running faster without timing yourself, how would you know you are getting slimmer if you never measured that waistline, how would you know you are making headways financially without accounting for your fortune, YOU would not know, plain and simple.

What I am saying now, is get rid of uncertainty and improvisation as much as you can, better keep some times off your schedule to live out of random events but in your professional lives, leaving room to improvisation is rarely rewarding other than for creative jobs.

Know how far you can go, it can only be beneficial.
